The Truth About Today

It's a shame to thing that in today's society, standing up for your own beliefs, standing up against injustice, and in face even just having an opinion is grounds for the rest of the world to judge, and exploit who you are. I know this first hand. Ashton is my pen name, one that I created to serve the purpose that I could express my true feelings, and voice my opinions, without having to suffer the consequences in my daily life. At this point in time, I cannot wait until the day when we are all truly free to say what's on our minds and not be scrutinized by the world around us. Unfortunately, until that day, this is the way it has to be.

John Galliano - How The Mighty Have Fallen

                                          

It’s not unheard of to hear news stories and broadcasts everyday about stars and celebrities who have clawed their way to the top of the fame chain, glowed in the lime light for a few years and then fallen spontaneously off of the band wagon. Sometimes they make a comeback and return to center stage, sometimes they don’t.  However if you consider it carefully, we (the public) are the determining factor in whether or not their return to fame is successful or not. It truly depends on if these people of the public eye have performed such terrible deeds, and made such dire mistakes that we should opt to deny them our forgiveness and send them, and their careers packing their bags. They had their shot and they blew it. In the Case of John Galliano, he started off as a promising young fashion star and swiftly rose to prominence as the creative directors of Givenchy and soon afterwards the House of Dior. He was creative, talented, artistic, and had a vision that was truly unique and a reflection of himself. In 2011 after succumbing to the temptations of substance abuse, he was arrested at a bar in France for making public racial and anti-Semitic remarks, he went to trial, faced charges, and was dismissed from his position at Christian Dior. Now, over 2 years later, he has been given a second chance. Taken under the wing of Oscar de la Renta, and backed with the word of Anna Wintour, Galliano is struggling to reclaim the name he so swiftly tarnished. But what I’m wondering is, does he deserve forgiveness? Does his creative talent make him an exception to the morals and ethics of standard society? I want to you know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

Breaking The Mold

 

Don’t judge a book by its cover. This very principle applies to people too. So many companies state that they do not discriminate based on age, race, gender, sexual orientation etc. However, they seem to have no problem discriminating against people with tattoos, piercings, or other forms of body art. Understandably, the validity of a clean, well-kept image is what some companies look for in their representatives. However, not hiring someone simply because they have tattoos is not only discrimination; it is assuming that they are incapable of performing the job tasks. Simply because a person has tattoos doesn’t mean they can’t do they job just as well as - if not better than - employees without tattoos. It is a person’s birth-right to express themselves in any way they find pleasing. In a point of view look at things, some people consider tattoos, piercings, etc. to be beautiful, eye pleasing, and a form of self-expression. Others may consider them degrading, unattractive, and self-mutilation. Looking at both sides, it seems unfair to only enforce one point of view while completely disregarding the other. The fact is, today tattoos are a large part of a modern, cultural society.

 

Every Man For Himself

 

        “Don’t Talk To Strangers!”  A common phrase that every parent wants their child to remember with the hopes of ensuring his or her safety. However, in today’s society the term “stranger” has been modified and directed more so towards adult males. In the longstanding fight for gender equality, women were once considered to be inferior to men, being unable to vote or obtain industrial jobs. Now, the tables are turning, and the modern man is facing a new type of discrimination. Pedophilia! Whether it be sitting next to a minor on board a flight, or taking a few scenic photographs at the beach, society has created such a negative stereotype of men in general, that even the most ordinary of actions are perceived as intimidating, and even posing a potential threat. Let’s look at the facts; statistics show that the vast majority of sexual offences involving a male perpetrator were done by a relative to the victim as opposed to a total stranger. By allowing this kind of discrimination, frame of mind, and injustice, as a society we are at risk of alienating the male gender by categorizing men into such negative stereotypes including pedophilia, terrorism, theft, and many others.

The Human Race

 

    

The world, as we know it, has made many drastic changes as it has evolved and grown over the last few hundred years.  Women’s rights have progressed tremendously, marital freedoms have advanced, and religious tolerance has expanded. It’s true that the human race has come a long way in terms of its ideas of acceptance, but let’s not be fooled into thinking that the evolution of acceptance is anywhere near its end. 

     The year is 2013, and the concepts of racial diversity, religious diversity, and cultural diversity are not new to the world. However, it seems that intolerance, disrespect, and ignorance are still a big issue. Why? Every day, news is reported and stories are spread about racism in the workplace, or children being bullied at school because of their ethnic or religious backgrounds. Even verbal abuse and threats in public are still a common occurrence. THIS HAS GOT TO END!

     I have attached the following video with the hopes of spreading an understanding about where racism comes from and how it started. However, what I’m more interested in is where does it end, and why hasn’t it already?
